Solaria Ainsworth was born a Templar, destined to take up the mantle of responsibility and duty as her family’s Order had done for hundreds of years.
Except she refuses to take her Oath of Knighthood.
Barely making ends meet in Baltimore, Aria finds it difficult to obtain gainful employment with no work experience and skills in jousting and swordsmanship. Just before she’s served an eviction notice, the Mistress of the local vampire family offers her a job—to research a magical symbol. It’s an easy task for a woman who has spent every moment of her life either in armor or with her nose in ancient manuscripts. The money’s good, and the seven day deadline should be no problem.
But when her research reveals a sordid connection between the vampires and a mass murder, Aria needs to decide who is in the right and worthy of her protection. Modern Templars believe only God should judge, but Aria must do exactly that or watch the Baltimore streets run red with blood.

I read Debra Dunbar's Imp series, so I was already a fan of her writing. Aria is the heroine of this Templar series, and while she's not very similar at all to Sam from the Imp series, she still has that sense of humor that I love and that's a mark of Dunbar's writing. When we meet Aria we learn she's kind of the black sheep because she refused to become a Templar knight like the rest of her family did. She went through the training to become a knight but she wants to follow her own path even if that means being broke and barely being able to pay rent. That's when we meet Dario, who is definitely a fast favorite of mine. Dario recruits Sam to work for his vampire family because of her Templar skills, and that's how the book's central plot and mystery unfolds. The book was fast paced and I wasn't bored for a second, I enjoyed the story. My favorite part admittedly was the interactions between Dario and Aria. Their tentative friendship and maybe more is complicated by the fact that they're members of different species and live very different lives, but they have an undeniable connection. I think what I enjoy most about Dunbar's writing is she doesn't take everything too seriously...you're meant to laugh while reading her work and yet it still has some depth and she still takes time to properly develop her characters. Enjoy.

Dead Rising eBook Debra Dunbar Reviews

The story here is both dark and interesting, you have to decide who the actual bad guys are for yourself. We're not talking shades of grey, but shades of black here. That being said the main character is a total failure as far as achievements go, but given her 'moral code' that's both realistic and fitting with the story. Seriously though pick a side and smite, smite, smite then the body count would have been like 1/3 of what we get by the end of the book.
As with all her books I think they are well worth the read. This time, the female protag reminds me a little bit of Jill Kismet, - which is a good thing. A complex developed character, who doesnt suffer from badass decay, which is allways allways a good thing when there is a bit of a love interest in the plot.

If you are already familiar with the author, and liked the previous series, you will like this one too.

The protag is a young woman, from an ancient line of Templars. Particularly her grandfather seems to have been more than your average bastard sword wielding badass. So alot of hope and promise is riding on the young lady, to pick up the gauntlet and do her family and traditions proud.

So naturally she declines to take the oat that might lock her into the Templar role, before she has even experienced life, and goes to work in a coffee shop. - Yep!

It sounds like this could be tripe but its not. She is already a templar, bar the oath, and so it doesnt take long before her skills and particular knowledge is requested by other factions. And this is the premises for the series.

(PS. There is a lack of proof reading with this title. It is not good when your and you're are used incorrectly. Im not a native english speaker, so if I can catch this, a proof reader should have done so)
Debra Dunbar is a great writer, so after gobbling up her Imp Series, Imp World, Half Breed, and Northern Wolves series, I was intrigued to see her Templar series. It does not disappoint. Aria is an Un-Oathed Templar who meets Dario, a centuries -old vampire and they have an uneasy chemistry. When he comes to her in search of help for his balaj of Vampires, she is drawn in and do is the reader.

As usual in Dunbar novels, there's great characters and plotting, paced excellently, with her humor keeping it all light in the right places. This one is so well-written, and I will continue to read the other books in this promising series. I highly recommend it to fans of the paranormal.

As Always, I Wish Happy Reads to All from the Unapologetic Book Junkie 😉!
Who knew that members of an ancient order of knights lived peacefully on the east coast? The knights live lives of genteel privilege, their wealth passed down from generation to generation, their duties limited to hoarding and guarding magical artifacts in their temple. Aria Ainsworth loves her family but chafes under the expectation that her future has been set in stone from the moment of her birth. In what looks for all the world like a fit of immature pique, Aria refuses to take her oath of knighthood, leaves the family compound, and moves to Baltimore, where her antiquated education qualifies her to get a part time job as a barista at a coffee shop. She comes to the attention of the local balaj of vampires, who hire her to investigate an arcane symbol. She isn't actually a knight and she shouldn't accept money for the task but at least it's a job that she's trained to accomplish. It doesn't take long for things to get much more complicated than Aria expected, especially with the hunky vampire Dario assigned as her minder. Aria finds herself investigating not only the symbol but a group of forty year old murders that might be tied to recent necromantic events in Baltimore. As the story progresses it becomes clear that Aria is far more mature and self aware than she first appears. The original assignment Aria accepts from the vampires becomes merely the first step in her quest to breathe new meaning and purpose into her family's ancient duties.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read! Yes, it is a departure from the tone Debra Dunbar used in her Imps books but variety is the spice of life and this in no way detracts from what is an excellent and engrossing story. As to the review titled "Are you really interested in men in tight leather pants?" Don't be misled by this review, in fact make sure you read the 2 comments added below the review by other people. There is no actual sex as such to be had in the book, there are the natural lead ups to the beginnings of a possible romance whilst the character struggles with the dark nature of the vampire. I could not find where the character obsesses about the male physique. This is great Urban Fantasy and I'm already part way through the second book, which is just as good, I hope you all enjoy this series as much as I am!
